<p><strong>The World Health Organization (WHO) recently stated (July 14, 2023) that, citing &#8220;limited evidence&#8221; of carcinogenicity in humans, the IARC has classified aspartame as a Group 2B carcinogen, meaning it is &#8220;possibly carcinogenic to humans.&#8221; . Aspartame was thus classified for the first time in &#8220;Group 2B,&#8221; which designates aspartame as a substance that is possibly carcinogenic to humans (<strong>possibly carcinogenic to humans</strong>). JECFA reconfirmed the acceptable daily intake of aspartame at 40 mg/kg of body weight. It is, of course, up to each of us to draw our own conclusions from this. Just for your information, <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/composition-of-commonly-available-chewing-gum/">commonly available chewing gum</a> in supermarkets and stores contains 99% of the artificial sweetener aspartame, which has long been considered a harmful substance. People are unaware of this. That is why we are writing about it, so that you can learn about it and form your own opinion.</strong></p>



<h2>Aspartame is carcinogenic</h2>



<p><strong>Aspartame (E951) is one of the best-known <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#artificial-sweeteners">artificial sweeteners</a>. </strong> It is classified as a food additive and is widely used by food manufacturers. However, this does not mean that it is good to consume. To put it simply, aspartame is &#8220;on the edge&#8221; and belongs to the group of <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/">controversial ingredients in chewing gum</a>/food. And the fact that there is little evidence that aspartame causes cancer does not reassure me. There has been speculation for years that it is carcinogenic. This artificial sweetener is classified as highly harmful and unsuitable for children. It is very common for aspartame to be found in chewing gum, powdered drinks, tea, yogurt, desserts, puddings, breakfast cereals, mayonnaise, pickled vegetables and fruit, and other foods. </p>



<h3>2023 survey results &#8211; is aspartame carcinogenic or not?</h3>



<p>According to Dr. Francesco Branda, Director of the WHO&#8217;s Department of Nutrition and Food Safety [<a href="#sources">2</a>], describe the potential effects of aspartame, which <em>need to be investigated further and with better studies</em>. </p>



<p>These two bodies, IARC [<a href="#sources">3</a>] and JECFA [<a href="#sources">4</a>] conducted independent but complementary reviews to assess the potential carcinogenic hazards and other health risks associated with the consumption of aspartame. This was the first time that IARC had evaluated aspartame and the third time for JECFA. <strong>IARC classified aspartame as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B)</strong> [<a href="#links">5</a>] based on limited evidence of cancer in humans (specifically hepatocellular carcinoma, a type of liver cancer). There is also limited evidence of cancer in experimental animals. </p>



<h3>The implications of the new classification of aspartame may be far-reaching </h3>



<p>About <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#aspartame">aspartame</a> [<a href="#sources">6</a>], we can say that the World Health Organization has classified it as a potentially carcinogenic substance. This could have far-reaching implications for the food industry. The artificial sweetener aspartame is used to sweeten chewing gum and carbonated soft drinks, including Diet Coke. This artificial sweetener is 200 times sweeter than refined sugar (common sugar). It is widely used in the food industry, but also in the manufacture of medicines. Sweetener manufacturers criticize the IARC&#8217;s work, saying that its statements could be misleading, as has been the case several times in the past. </p>



<h3>What to think about the CTK article &#8220;ICBA: Aspartame is safe, confirm WHO and FAO&#8221; | Caution &#8211; common sense must be used</h3>



<p>It is very difficult to trust the statements [<a href="#napsali">7</a>] issued by the <strong>ICBA</strong> (International Council of Beverages Associations). This organization is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1995 that <strong>represents the interests of the global soft drink industry</strong>. Its members include national and regional beverage associations and international beverage manufacturers operating in more than 200 countries and regions, producing, distributing, and selling various carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, including lemonades, sports drinks, energy drinks, bottled waters, flavored and/or enriched waters, ready-to-drink teas and coffees, 100% fruit or vegetable juices, nectars and juices, and milk-based beverages. </p>



<p><strong>Having just read the entire list of what the ICBA stands for, I hope it is clear that this organization is not going to say that aspartame is a problem. </strong>The ICBA is there for beverage companies, for their growing revenues. That is why it was created. Its goal is to promote its interests. This article, published by CTK, provides information on what the ICBA has taken from the statements of the WHO, FAO, JECFA, and IARC. <strong>It is a slightly distorted view of the matter</strong>. Note the passage where CTK quotes the ICBA&#8217;s executive director—i.e., that this is not the opinion of the WHO, FAO, JECFA, or IARC, but the opinion of the ICBA. I will now quote from the CTK article, which clearly shows what the article contains &#8211; <em><strong>&#8220;</strong></em><strong><em>ICBA Executive Director Kate Loatman welcomed the WHO and FAO conclusions with the words:&#8221; </em></strong>Or this sentence: <strong><em>&#8220;In connection with the opinion of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which was first published on June 29, Ms. Loatman added:&#8221;. </em> </strong>We must learn to read between the lines. Today&#8217;s world is full of lies and distortions of facts. Marketing and lobbying practices are more visible. You have to take this into account and view information accordingly. CTK only reports what has been said, it does not distort, but we must also think critically about what we read in Czech newspapers. </p>



<h3>What to take away from this | Recommendations</h3>



<p>It&#8217;s up to each of us. There are many people among us who know that smoking is unhealthy and yet still smoke. Many of us also know that large amounts of alcohol are harmful to our health, yet we continue to drink heavily. There is also a group of people, to which we belong, who care about our health and the health of our loved ones. If we know that a substance is harmful to our health, we avoid it or at least try to limit its consumption to a minimum. It is not necessary to avoid everything that could potentially harm our health 100%. And that is where our recommendation comes in. </p>



<p>If you chew a lot and want to take full advantage of the benefits of chewing, look for a healthier option <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/chewing-gum/">chewing gum</a> without aspartame and plastic materials &#8211; i.e., chewing gum that states that <a href="https://healthychewinggum.com/blog/what-is-a-gum-base-or-rubber-base-why-is-it-important/">gum base</a> does not contain plastic materials or that it is gum with a natural gum base. </p>



<p>If you chew gum once a month, you probably don&#8217;t need to worry about it at all. It&#8217;s up to you. </p>

<p><strong>Chewing gum</strong> consists of small pieces of synthetic or natural rubber, available in different flavors, shapes, textures, and fillings. It has a <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/en/blog-en/history-of-chewing-gum/">documented history</a> of more than 9,000 years – and that’s only what has been proven. <mark style="background-color: pink" class="has-inline-color">Its golden age came in the 19th century</mark>, when the first commercial gum was made and the world’s first gum factory was built. The USA was the cradle of modern chewing gum and led the commercial chewing gum era. Chewing was present across all inhabited continents.</p>



<h3 id="definition">Definition of Chewing Gum</h3>



<p>There are many <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/en/blog-en/what-is-chewing-gum/">definitions of chewing gum</a>. To me, gum is a sweet treat that connects body and soul within seconds. Everyone has a favorite <mark style="background-color: pink" class="has-inline-color">flavor</mark>, and if they haven’t been discouraged by myths, they chew from childhood to older age. Since older generations often avoid gum, here are the myths – which are usually false and unfair.</p>



<h3 id="myths">Myths About Chewing Gum</h3>



<h4>1) Chewing gum pulls out fillings</h4>



<p>Some claim that gum pulls out fillings or damages teeth. That’s not true. If your dentist has done proper work, chewing won’t dislodge anything. Dental materials and adhesives are far stronger than the pressure from chewing. If a filling comes loose while chewing, it likely would have come out during a meal anyway.</p>

But like most foods, there are better and worse options. Criticizing food is easy. Offering healthier alternatives is harder.</p>



<p>In the same store, you can find both ice cream full of additives and one with just five natural <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/en/blog-en/chewing-gum-ingredients/">ingredients</a>. It’s up to you whether you choose healthy chewing or commercial gum. Not all gums are toxic—some are made <mark style="background-color: pink" class="has-inline-color">without plastic materials</mark>, preservatives, or artificial additives. <p><strong><mark style="background-color: pink" class="has-inline-color">During World War II, gum formulation changed</mark>.</strong> Natural raw materials were inconsistent, so producers switched to synthetic bases. These “improved” properties like flavor longevity—but health benefits dropped. Luckily, we now live in a time of returning to natural ingredients.</p>

<h5>What does this mean?</h5>



<p><strong>A)</strong> After WWII, most chewing gum started to be made from synthetic materials—plastic, artificial sweeteners, colorants, preservatives. If you throw gum on the street, you’re throwing plastic. And it’ll stay there for years. Please dispose of gum in the trash—ideally wrapped in paper so it doesn’t stick to bins.</p>



<p><strong>B)</strong> If you chew often, avoid sugared gum and opt for sugar-free options. I recommend choosing healthy chewing gums—free of <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/en/blog-en/controversial-ingredients-in-chewing-gum/">controversial ingredients</a>, plastic-free, and chemical-free. Watch out for vague terms like “gum base”—this usually means synthetic plastic components. Look for gums with a natural gum base instead.</p>



<h4 id="healthy">Healthy Chewing Gums Without &#8220;Controversial Ingredients&#8221;</h4>



<p>If you want to chew cleanly—without artificial stuff—you’ll need to start checking ingredients. Just read the packaging. Maybe you’ve never done that before. That’s okay. You can start now.</p>

<li>Or go fully natural—look for gums made with <mark style="background-color: pink" class="has-inline-color">xylitol and natural gum base</mark> from sustainable sources.</li>

<p><strong>Out of curiosity, I went to Austria to see how our neighbors are doing with commonly available chewing gums and healthy chewing gums. <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">They have a wider selection. Customers perceive the benefits of Xylitol chewing gums more.</mark> There is also a larger offering of healthy chewing gums visible. Austrians value organic food (and natural food), so it was not surprising for me. Financial independence (higher income) helps them, which enhances the quality of chewing gum offerings (chewing gums in Austria).</strong></p>

<p>In Austria, you can see a <strong>wider range of chewing gums</strong> on the checkout counters. The selection is not only from the largest manufacturer, Mars, but also from other manufacturers. It&#8217;s pleasant that I <strong>came across <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">chewing gums</mark> containing <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/xylitol-en/">Xylitol</a></strong> and this information is even proudly displayed on the packaging <strong>in large letters.</strong> This means one thing. <strong><mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-1-color">Austrian customers seek out chewing gums with Xylitol (healthy gums/BIO gums) &#8211; they are interested in them.</mark></strong> We are lagging behind. But that doesn&#8217;t mean it can&#8217;t change in a few years.</p>

<h3 id="ingredients-of-commonly-available-chewing-gums">Ingredients of Commonly Available Chewing Gums in Austria vs. CZ</h3>



<p>I was curious if Austrians have better <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/">ingredients in chewing gums</a>. This is not a 100% comparison, but only a quick layman&#8217;s comparison of the packaging that is most commonly found in Austrian (AT) and Czech (CZ) supermarkets. I&#8217;m only addressing <strong><a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/">controversial substances that can be harmful to health</a>.</strong></p>

<p><strong>AT </strong>&#8211; chewing gums often contain <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#aspartame">Aspartame</a>, <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#acesulfame-k">Acesulfame K</a>, <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#sorbitol">Sorbitol</a> and antioxidant <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#bha-and-bht">BHA</a>. Occasionally also <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#brilliant-blue-fcf">dye E133 (brilliant blue FCF)</a> &#8211; same as here). I would expect the Austrian neighbors to be more careful about this. But that will change over time.</p>



<p><strong>CZ</strong> &#8211; chewing gums often contain Aspartame, Acesulfame K, Sorbitol, Maltitol, Mannitol, and antioxidant BHA.</p>



<h4 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h4>



<p><strong><mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-1-color">I see no difference in the ingredients of commonly available chewing gums in supermarkets in the Czech Republic vs. Austria.</mark></strong></p>



<h3 id="offer-of-xylitol-chewing-gums">Offer of Xylitol Chewing Gums or Healthy Chewing Gums in Austria vs. CZ</h3>



<p><strong>In the offer of <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">Xylitol chewing gums</mark> or healthy chewing gums</strong> in comparison of the Austrian and Czech markets, differences are already <strong>visible</strong>. Austrians <strong>commonly have Xylitol chewing gums</strong> on offer. Customers are interested in these chewing gums, as the main inscriptions on the packaging are described with the words &#8220;Xylitol&#8221; and various variations.</p>



<p>Just because a chewing gum contains Xylitol doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s healthy. It is also necessary to monitor other <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/">ingredients in chewing gums</a>. That&#8217;s why I also looked on the Austrian market to see if customers in Austria have the opportunity to buy <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/what-is-healthy-chewing-gum/">healthy chewing gums</a> (BIO chewing gums). Yes, this option was confirmed to me in the DM chain and also in BILLA. In the Czech Republic, the drugstore DM also offers healthy chewing gums, but I did not come across healthy chewing gums in a regular supermarket.</p>



<h4 id="conclusion-2">Conclusion</h4>



<p>The Austrian customer has a small but wider selection of healthy chewing gums than the Czech customer. However, this is more because the Czech customer is not yet aware of this option. Therefore, the market has not expanded the offer. What the customer does not demand, the market does not offer. But that will change.</p>



<h3 id="in-the-czech-republic">In the Czech Republic</h3>



<p>At the beginning of 2023, our supermarkets in the Czech Republic primarily offer <strong><a href="https://zdravezvykacky.cz/blog/zvykacky-bez-cukru/https://zdravezvykacky.cz/blog/zvykacky-bez-cukru/">sugar-free </a><a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/sugar-free-chewing-gum/">chewing gums</a></strong>. Perhaps that&#8217;s enough for the Czech customer for now. When it comes to xylitol chewing gum, it&#8217;s rather inconspicuous. In <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Austria</a>, it&#8217;s a bit better, where you can find chewing gums with <strong>the main label Xylitol</strong> &#8211; see the photo. Apparently, there is a bit more awareness here, but honestly, I would expect bigger differences. The offer should be more extensive on both sides.</p>

There is now a demand for <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/what-is-healthy-chewing-gum/">healthy chewing gums</a> that are beneficial to our health and the environment. Manufacturers are returning to original recipes and ingredients.</strong></p>



<p class="has-normal-font-size">You can discover healthy chewing gums from various brands with similar characteristics &#8211; they are naturally plant-based, biodegradable, do not contain <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/sugar-free-chewing-gum/#sugar">sugar</a>, <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/controversial-chewing-gum-ingredients/#aspartame">aspartame</a>, plastics, artificial sweeteners &#8211; they are sweetened with 100% <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/xylitol-en/">xylitol</a> for healthy teeth.</p>

<h2>What is chewing gum made of?</h2>



<h3 id="chicle">Natural rubber base (chicle)</h3>



<p class="has-normal-font-size">For <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/chewing-gum-production/">centuries in the production of chewing gums</a>, <strong>natural rubber base (natural gum), most commonly chicle, was used.</strong> During World War II, chewing gum began to appear in the rations of every American soldier. During World War II, there was an international increase in chewing gum consumption and also disruptions in the supply of <strong>sapodilla</strong>, which produced chicle.</p>



<h3 id="synthetic-rubber-base">Synthetic rubber base</h3>



<p class="has-normal-font-size">For this reason, chewing gum manufacturers rushed to find an alternative to chicle-based chewing gum recipes. This led to the development of <strong><a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/#synthetic-base">synthetic rubber base</a></strong> <strong>(synthetic gum)</strong> and new production methods that had lasting effects after World War II. Instead of <strong>chicle</strong>, <strong>natural rubber base</strong>, synthetic rubber base began to be added to chewing gums.</p>



<p class="has-normal-font-size">Chemists were able to ensure stable production as a result. And as development demands, properties need to be further improved due to increasing demand. Other <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/">ingredients</a>, including health-hazardous ones, began to be added to chewing gums.</p>



<h4 id="sugar-free-chewing-gum">Sugar-free chewing gum</h4>



<p>It was the year 1950 when <strong>sugar-free chewing gum</strong> was first introduced. This discovery was made by dentist Dr. Petrulis, who sold it to William Wrigley Jr. In 1960, the first sugar-free bubble gum (i.e., bubble gum) was introduced. <strong>The American nation was increasingly concerned about their health, and chewing gums followed suit.</strong> Today, <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/sugar-free-chewing-gum/">sugar-free chewing gums</a> are supplied in huge quantities and have become even more popular due to their improved abilities.</p>

<p>Customers can now look at the composition on food labels. They have more rights than ever before. Therefore, they also pay attention to <strong><a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/">chewing gum ingredients</a></strong> and take care of their health. They are looking for <strong><mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-8-color">healthy chewing gums</mark></strong>. Manufacturers are aware of this and are beginning to focus on <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/what-is-healthy-chewing-gum/">healthy chewing gums</a>.</p>



<p>Sugar-free gum was a

 very good step towards tooth health and reducing tooth decay, but it didn&#8217;t stop there. <strong>Chewing gums can be healthy.</strong> That means without additional ingredients that may not be necessary in chewing gums and could endanger health.</p>

<p class="has-normal-font-size">Polyethylene is a thermoplastic (PE) &#8211; it is the most commonly used plastic. This substance should definitely not be used in chewing gums not only for reasons of our health but also from an ecological perspective. The same applies to polyvinyl acetate.</p>



<h4 id="sladidla">2) Sweeteners</h4>



<p class="has-normal-font-size">They are used to sweeten the gum. These include sugar, glucose or corn syrup, dextrose, isomalt, maltitol, <a href="https://zdravezvykacky.cz/blog/xylitol/">xylitol</a>, mannitol, sorbitol, erythritol, lactitol, etc. Among the most popular synthetic <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/#sweeteners">sweeteners</a> are aspartame, acesulfame-K, sucralose, saccharin, etc.</p>



<h4>3) Plasticizers</h4>



<p class="has-normal-font-size">Plasticizers are added to chewing gums to maintain moisture and increase elasticity.</p>



<h4>4) Flavors</h4>



<p class="has-normal-font-size">They are added to chewing gums for taste. They can be natural or synthetic. <p>According to the study below, it has been shown that <strong><mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-1-color"> using sugar-free chewing gum with xylitol led to a reduction in tooth decay without side effects. </mark></strong></p>

In the Czech Republic, the most common forms of chewing gum are in the form of dragees (i.e., flattened shape with a glossy coating) and stick gums. Let&#8217;s take a look at other types of chewing gums available.</strong></p>



<p><a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/chewing-gum-definition/"> Chewing gum</a> is a combination of 2 components:</p>



<ul>
<li>water-insoluble <a href="https://zdravezvykacky.cz/blog/ingredience-ve-zvykackach/#guma">gum</a> (gum base), and</li>



<li>water-soluble <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/#sweeteners">sweeteners</a>, <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/#flavors">flavors</a>, and food colorings. </li>

<h2>Types of Chewing Gums</h2>

<p><strong>Xylitol is a sweetener found in nature. <mark style="background-color:#febfcb;color:#3a3a3a" class="has-inline-color"> It is considered a healthy sugar because it does not harm teeth. </mark> That&#8217;s why manufacturers nowadays use it in the production of healthy chewing gums and candies.  </strong></p>



<h2>Xylitol</h2>



<p><strong>Xylitol is a natural <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/#sweeteners">sweetener</a></strong> also known as wood sugar or birch sugar. It belongs to the group of sugar alcohols (polyols). Xylitol is found in small amounts in many types of fruits and vegetables, making it <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/ingredients-in-chewing-gum/#natural-base">natural</a>. People even produce it in small amounts through their metabolism (i.e., our bodies produce it themselves). </p>



<p>It is a common ingredient in <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/sugar-free-chewing-gum/">sugar-free chewing gums</a>, candies, mints, foods intended for diabetes, and oral care products (<mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">oral hygiene</mark>). </p>



<p>For maximum utilization of the benefits of xylitol contained in sugar-free chewing gums, it is necessary to follow certain rules &#8211; i.e., <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">when to chew</mark>. Ideally, chewing immediately after eating or drinking for at least 20 minutes. Chewing gums should be sweetened only with xylitol. <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/why-do-you-need-xylitol-in-your-chewing-gum/">Why do you need xylitol in your chewing gum?</a> According to studies, other sweeteners do not achieve such demonstrable health benefits, on the contrary &#8211; they often have side effects and can be harmful to health.</p>

<h3>Less Calories &#8211; Diet</h3>



<p>Xylitol has a similar sweetness to regular sugar but contains <strong>40% fewer calories</strong>.</p>

<p>For people with diabetes, prediabetes, obesity, or other metabolic issues, <strong>xylitol is an excellent alternative to sugar</strong>. Animal studies show impressive

 benefits for metabolic health &#8211; improving diabetes symptoms, reducing abdominal fat, and even preventing weight gain on a high-calorie diet.</p>



<h3>Dental Health</h3>



<p><strong>Many dentists recommend using <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">xylitol-sweetened chewing gums</mark> as a supplement to <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">oral (dental) hygiene</mark>.</strong> They have a reason for that. Studies<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5320817/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">[5]</a> have shown that xylitol promotes dental health and helps prevent tooth decay. These are called <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">xylitol chewing gums</mark>.</p>



<p>When you chew <mark style="background-color:var(--ast-global-color-0)" class="has-inline-color">chewing gums</mark> with xylitol or use it as a sweetener, harmful bacteria in your mouth starve.</p>



<p>In one study <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3434645/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">[6]</a>, chewing gums sweetened with xylitol reduced levels of bad bacteria by 27-75%, while levels of friendly bacteria remained constant.</p>



<p>Studies <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11721142/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">[7]</a>,<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12778091/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">[8]</a> in animals also suggest that xylitol may increase calcium absorption in your digestive system, protect against osteoporosis, and strengthen teeth.</p>



<h3>Reduction of Ear and Yeast Infections</h3>



<p>Your mouth, nose, and ears are interconnected. Bacteria living in your mouth can therefore cause ear infections. Xylitol has been shown to starve some of these bacteria. Studies<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2352484/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><sup>6</sup></a> have shown that <strong>daily consumption of xylitol-sweetened chewing gums reduced the rate of ear infections by 40% in children with recurrent ear infections</strong>.</p>

<h2>Chewing gum with aspartame (chewing gum with xylitol)</h2>



<p>Commonly available chewing gum contains<a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/aspartame-is-potentially-carcinogenic/"> the synthetic sweetener aspartame, which was defined as a potentially carcinogenic substance by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2023</a>. The most acceptable substitute for sugar or aspartame is the natural sweetener xylitol. Our recommendation is to avoid chewing gum containing aspartame or other synthetic sweeteners that are not beneficial to health. The ideal choice is chewing gum that contains only xylitol or a combination with stevia.</p>

<p>According to this study, <strong>chewing in human subjects represents a measurable energy expenditure</strong>. <strong><mark style="background-color:#febfcb" class="has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-1-color">Chewing gum speeds up metabolism by 10-15% according to the research.</mark></strong> Expenditure increases based on the hardness of <a href="https://healthchewinggum.com/blog-en/chewing-gum-definition/">chewing gum</a>.
